What Are Indices?

Global indices are powerful indicators representing the direction of companies’ quotes in specific industries. Investors generally trade indices to either speculate on a particular economy or to protect against the shares in their portfolio losing value. For example, a trader thinking the UK stock market will rise would buy the FTSE 100 instead of buying all the underlying shares in the FTSE and vice versa if the trader thinks the market would depreciate.
